What’s It All About

The 1 Sentence Summary of The Platform (El Hoyo)

A man volunteers to be sent to a vertical prison that allows for only two minutes of feeding on left over food from the floors above per day.

Cast and Director

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutiana, and starring Ivan Massagué, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, this horror film shocks with both the gore and the political messaging.

Spoiler Alert

We’d much rather you watch the movie than read some of our favorite and least favorite parts about it. But if you have to know, check out our breakdown below.

The best scene of this movie is definitely when Goreng (Ivan Massagué) and Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) get moved to a lower floor of the prison. The lower the floors get, the less food there is. Trimagasi, having been in the pit for a long time, immediately ties up Goreng and tells him he is going to eat him when he can’t take the hunger anymore. But don’t worry, he’ll share with him.

At one point, Goreng, is paired with Baharat (Emilio Buale) on floor six. Baharat is carrying a large rope with him and begs the floor above to pull him up, he wants to get to level zero. During this time, Goreng befriends Baharat and comes up with a plan to get him the floor zero by riding the platform back to the top when it reaches the end. Baharat is a vital character. He is a believer, he has faith and he is dedicated to helping Goreng achieve the mission.

Goreng (Ivan Massagué) and Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) on are on the lower level floor with no food. Trimagasi is preparing to eat Goreng, he is cutting a slice of his leg off. Miharu (Alexandra Masangkay) comes out of the dark and brutally murders Trimagasi. Goreng comes to and find Miharu eating Trimagasi.

There is a clear socialist message in this movie which sours it in the end. It was an interesting concept, a tiered prison that punishes based on random level assignment. But ultimately, the political messaging ruined the overall like-ability of the film.

There is also the random introduction of the unaffected girl (who ends up being part of the political messaging) on the last level of the prison.  A story line around the woman Miharu looking for her daughter introduced her existence, but ultimately it was a feeble attempt to link the woman and the overall plot of the movie together.

Lastly, if the solution was to ride the platform to the end and back up, why didn’t other prisoners do this? There wasn’t any punishment and ultimately it is how the little girl ended up “escaping”.

Scare Critics Say: IF YOU'RE DESPERATE

Scare Critic Review

This film offers few redeeming qualities. Some of the characters are interesting at times and there is quite a bit of cannibalism going on, so if you're interested in people eating people this might be the movie for you.
